The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated attorney to serve as a full-time, contractual Assistant Attorney General (AAG) representing the Prince George’s County Child Support Administration (PGCCSA). As the jurisdiction with the highest volume of active child support cases in Maryland, PGCCSA plays a vital role in ensuring that children and families receive the financial support they need to thrive. This position is part of a collaborative legal team that includes eight Assistant Attorneys General—led by a Supervising Attorney and a Lead Supervising Attorney—and is supported by one Legal Secretary.
Responsibilities
This role will primarily be responsible for representing the PGCCSA before the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County in proceedings involving the establishment of paternity and/or child support, modifying child support orders where appropriate, and judicial enforcement of child support orders. The AAG will draft and/or review agency pleadings and motions, appear in court to litigate child support matters, and prepare and electronically file proposed orders as needed. AAGs routinely interact with child support and judiciary personnel, child support litigants and their respective attorneys, law enforcement personnel, and other stakeholders for the Maryland child support program. This is a meaningful opportunity for an attorney who is passionate about public service and committed to supporting Maryland families through impactful legal work.
Qualifications
The ideal candidates will have a minimum of two years of litigation experience, as well as strong analytical, writing and advocacy skills. Candidates must have a proven ability to work independently, manage client expectations, and develop and implement legal strategies that lead to favorable outcomes. Prior admission to the Maryland Bar is required. Experience in family or civil law and proficiency with the Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC) system will be helpful, but is not required.
