The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for an Assistant Attorney General to represent the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). MDE is a state agency responsible for protecting and restoring the environment in Maryland. Its core mission is to safeguard public health and the environment by ensuring clean air, water, and land.
This position serves as counsel to MDE, with primary focus on supporting the Air and Radiation Administration (ARA). The ARA is responsible for regulating of air pollution and radiation sources throughout the state. Key responsibilities include providing legal and regulatory advice, representing MDE in litigation before state, federal, and appellate courts, as well as administrative agencies, and representation of the MDE’s various air quality programs. A significant aspect of this position is supporting MDE’s climate change initiatives, which involve developing and implementing innovative policies to reduce and sequester greenhouse gas emissions and otherwise mitigate the environmental and public health impacts of climate change.
This position will have the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively with a dynamic legal team. In addition to air-related matters, the position may also engage in legal work related to water and land pollution, offering a broad and impactful scope of environmental legal practice.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of legal experience, including excellent litigation and writing skills. Experience in air pollution and environmental law is required. Admission to the Maryland Bar (or the ability to waive in) is required.
