The Vermont Attorney General’s Office (AGO) seeks a talented and motivated paralegal to provide services to the Agency of Transportation (AOT), the second largest agency in state government. AOT directly serves all Vermonters by maintaining the State’s transportation infrastructure including highway, rail, and aviation assets, as well as the operations at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

This position is to provide paralegal services to approximately six Assistant Attorney Generals (along with one other paralegal). AOT Legal Unit attorneys appear in federal and state courts, as well as administrative forums, including Natural Resources Board district environmental commissions, the Transportation Board, and the federal Surface Transportation Board. The Unit counsels and represents AOT on a wide variety of legal matters, including eminent domain and property owner compensation, permitting and land use, real estate transactions, federal regulation, sign law, Public Records Act requests, employment matters, and civil rights. The Unit also provides general counseling services to the Travel Information Council, the Traffic Committee, and the Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board.

Responsibilities of an AOT Paralegal includes, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting attorneys with preparation of legal documents, court cases, legal opinions and administrative hearings.
  • Assisting in the formulation or writing of policies and procedures.
  • Assisting in developing and drafting legislation.
  • Assisting in the promulgation of regulations.
  • Maintaining electronic databases for tracking cases and compiling statistical information.
  • Drafting legal documents as assigned, prepares discovery responses.
  • Drafting corresponds with parties, attorneys, courts and the public.
  • Maintaining and notifying attorney of case status and court schedule.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Duties are generally performed in office settings. Some work in the field could on rare occasions necessitate travel for which incumbents should have private means of transportation available. Some evening or overtime work may be required. Incumbents must be able to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and deal tactfully with the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and one (1) or more years of experience performing administrative duties requiring the use of office automation software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, or similar programs, in a legal or related field.

OR

Associate degree or paralegal degree or certificate and two (2) or more years of experience performing administrative duties requiring the use of office automation software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, or similar programs, in a legal or related field.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND six (6) or more years of experience performing   administrative duties requiring the use of office automation software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, or similar programs, in a legal or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree AND six (6) or more years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

OR

Associate’s degree AND eight (8) or more years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

OR

Paralegal degree or certificate based on 30 semester credit hours of study AND six (6) or more years or experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND ten (10) or more years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

This Paralegal position is a classified full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience.
