The California Department of Justice is hiring multiple attorneys to join the Appeals, Writs, and Trials Section of the Criminal Law Division in our Sacramento and Fresno offices.

Attorneys in this Appeals, Writs and Trials section handle felony criminal appeals and related writs before the state courts of appeal and the California Supreme Court, including death penalty cases.

Attorneys also respond to habeas corpus litigation in the United States District Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Federal habeas litigation may involve discovery and evidentiary hearings.

Deputies can expect frequent oral arguments in the Third and Fifth Appellate District of the California Court of Appeal, as well as occasional appearances in the California Supreme Court, the United States District Court, Central District of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Law students in their third year of law school or individuals eligible to take the California Bar Exam may be considered for the Graduate Legal Assistant (GLA) classification. The GLA position is a limited term position and promotion to a permanent DAG position is dependent upon passing the California State Bar and successful work performance.

While DOJ supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs.
