The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an experienced Assistant Attorney General to represent the State of Louisiana in post-conviction capital proceedings. This position involves handling complex, high-stakes litigation in both state and federal court. The successful candidate will be an exceptional litigator who thrives in a high-volume, deadline driven work environment with voluminous records and who possesses the ability to identify key issues, present compelling arguments at every stage of post-conviction review, and work within a collaborative team setting.
Responsibilities
The position of Assistant Attorney General may consist of, but is not limited to, the following duties:
- Represent the State in capital post-conviction proceedings at both the state and federal level, including evidentiary hearings and appellate argument;
- Coordinate with District Attorneys’ offices to obtain complete case files and records;
- Review trial transcripts, appellate records, investigative reports, and expert witness materials to develop litigation strategy;
- Draft responses to post-conviction petitions and habeas corpus applications, as well as procedural and substantive motions;
- Present oral arguments in state district courts and federal district courts;
- Collaborate closely with the Solicitor General’s Office on appeals before the Louisiana Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States—ensuring seamless coordination when cases reach the most important and high-profile stages;
- Work closely with other attorneys, investigators, and support staff to ensure thorough preparation and effective advocacy.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and admission to the Louisiana Bar (or eligibility for admission);
- At least 3-5 years of litigation experience, with substantial courtroom practice;
- Capital or post-conviction experience required;
- Exceptional oral advocacy and legal writing skills;
- Ability to manage complex cases and large volumes of records efficiently;
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with prosecutors, law enforcement, and court personnel;
- Requires regular statewide travel for hearings, oral arguments, and case coordination;
- Prior clerkship preferred (state or federal).
