The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking a highly motivated and mission-driven attorney to join the Opioids Enforcement Unit within the Consumer Protection Division as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG).
The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) enforces Maryland’s laws against unfair, abusive, and deceptive trade practices involving consumer goods, services, real estate, credit, and debt collection. Through investigations and legal action, CPD works to stop illegal business practices, secure restitution for harmed consumers, and deter future misconduct. The CPD is staffed by a dedicated team of about 36 Assistant Attorneys General and more than 40 professional staff, including investigators, analysts, and support personnel. Within CPD, the Opioids Enforcement Unit—led by a Unit Chief and comprised of four Assistant Attorneys General—focuses on high-impact enforcement efforts related to the opioid crisis, operating in a collaborative and mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities
This position offers a unique opportunity to play a critical role in Maryland’s ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. The AAG will be responsible for enforcing the Consumer Protection Act and related statutes in complex, high-stakes cases involving the illegal marketing, sale, and distribution of opioids and other controlled substances. The attorney will lead investigations, evaluate legal claims, and, where appropriate, initiate enforcement actions to secure restitution for affected consumers, obtain civil penalties, and pursue injunctive relief to prevent future violations.
This is a meaningful role for an attorney who is passionate about public service and committed to protecting Marylanders from deceptive and harmful practices. The work is both challenging and rewarding, offering the chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and communities across the state.
The ideal candidate will bring strong litigation, negotiation, and legal research and writing skills, along with demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Office and the Consumer Protection Division. The position may require occasional travel and work outside of standard business hours.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six (6) years of legal experience. The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral advocacy skills and will have demonstrated success working as part of a cooperative legal team to investigate and/or litigate cases. Experience in complex civil litigation (such as class action, mass tort, multidistrict, food and drug, or similar litigation) and administrative litigation is highly desirable.
