The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented attorney to join its legal team serving the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This position offers an opportunity to support DNR in its mission to preserve, protect, restore, and enhance Maryland’s natural resources. The legal team advises and represents DNR on a wide range of matters, including land acquisition and stewardship, management of state forests and parks, regulation of commercial fisheries and recreational fishing and hunting, oversight of aquaculture and endangered species protection, vessel licensing and excise tax collection, enforcement of environmental and natural resource laws, and legal support for affiliated entities such as the Maryland Environmental Trust, Chesapeake Bay Trust, and the Critical Area Commission.
The 15-person unit includes 13 Assistant Attorneys General, including the Principal Counsel, Deputy Principal Counsel, and Supervising Senior Attorney for Real Estate and Transactions, supported by an Office Manager and a Paralegal. This position will focus primarily on real estate and transactional matters.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Advising on real estate acquisitions, disposals, and use of public lands.
- Drafting, reviewing, and approving documents related to leasing, rights of entry, acquisitions, easements, and land management agreements.
- Providing guidance on the Public Information Act, Open Meetings Act, and other State law provisions.
- Reviewing contracts, grant agreements, and procurement transactions.
- Assisting litigators on real estate and transaction-related litigation.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This position may be filled at the AAG IV or AAG V level. The AAG IV is entry-level and does not require prior legal experience. For the AAG V level, candidates should have at least two years of legal experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in public service and government legal practice, as well as meaningful academic, internship, or clinical experience that reflects the ability to conduct legal research and writing. Coursework aligned with public law and service, and a demonstrated interest in environmental or real estate transactional law through law school or internships/clerkships, is highly desirable. Participation in legal clinics or academic publications while in law school and experience interning or clerking with a public law office is preferred. Admission to the Maryland Bar or eligibility for admission by waiver is required.
