The Department of Justice has broad statutory authority over civil legal matters and proceedings involving the state. The Attorney General is charged with administering and enforcing a wide variety of laws that benefit New Mexico residents. The Consumer Protection Division enforces laws such as the Unfair Practices Act, Fraud Against Taxpayers Act, antitrust laws protecting against price-fixing, bid-rigging and attempts to reduce competition.
Responsibilities
- Investigate complaints and claims and gather evidence to build affirmative cases
- Draft investigative memoranda, pleadings, motions, and briefing in civil matters in state and federal courts
- Propound and respond to written discovery
- Take and defend depositions
- Appear in court for motions practice and trials
- Work closely with colleagues and professional staff to accomplish litigation goals and meet all deadlines
- Negotiate settlements and represent the interests of the People of New Mexico
Qualifications
The Department of Justice is looking for candidate that demonstrate excellence in the following:

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and two (2) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).
