Assistant Attorney General – Criminal Appeals:  The Office of the West Virginia Attorney General is seeking attorneys for its Criminal Appellate Division.  Attorneys in the division manage a fast-moving direct appeals and habeas docket—researching and drafting merits briefs, writs, and motions in the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and the federal courts.  Attorneys also have the opportunity to present oral argument before the Supreme Court of Appeals.  Attorneys in the division have significant responsibility over their individual dockets: Successful applicants will be strong researchers, clear and organized writers, and detail-oriented (able to manage litigation deadlines and complex case records).  The division is also highly collaborative, with attorneys editing each other’s work and assisting with case strategy and argument preparation.

Prior criminal law experience, a judicial clerkship, and/or appellate litigation practice are preferred. Candidates must also have an active WV law license or be eligible for admission.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, list of references, and writing sample to jobs@wvago.gov with “Criminal Appellate Attorney” in the subject line.
