The Vermont Office of the Attorney General, Department of Mental Health Litigation Unit, has an immediate opening for an energetic and talented full-time Assistant Attorney General who will be responsible for representing the Vermont Department of Health.

The Attorney General’s Department of Mental Health Litigation unit provides legal services to all of the Department’s Divisions. Responsibilities of this position include litigating involuntary treatment cases in the Vermont Superior Court Family Division, cases involving competency and involuntary treatment in the Criminal Division, and representing the Department in administrative appeals before the Human Services Board. Other duties include contract review, related administrative legal work, and training mental health providers on all aspects of Vermont’s mental health laws.  The Unit consists of four Assistant Attorneys General who work closely with the Department of Mental Health General Counsel.

Located in Waterbury, the AAG will be responsible for handling litigation in Vermont Civil and Criminal Courts. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be capable of working as part of a team. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant experience, especially in Vermont, but newly admitted attorneys are welcome to apply. Candidates must be willing to travel and work independently, but within the structure of a government legal team. Self-reliance, IT skills and knowledge of state and federal health law, regulations and policies are a plus. Candidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.

This assistant attorney general position is an exempt full-time position.
