General Counsel Division, Government Services Section

The Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) seeks up to two full-time attorneys to join our Government Services team of twelve accomplished and collegial general counsel attorneys.  We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.  While this position is located in Salem, Oregon, in a beautiful, newly renovated space, we also offer opportunities for working remotely on a hybrid schedule.

The successful applicant(s) will work primarily within our Public Safety practice group providing advice, guidance and trainings to the Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Corrections, as well as other state agencies.

Specific areas of work:  The development of deep subject matter expertise in Oregon policing, and corrections; litigating administrative hearings and assisting with rulemakings; advising clients regarding the application of complex state and federal statutory and constitutional laws; experience in public records and public meetings laws and subpoena responses; providing effective staff trainings, and other work as assigned by management.

A strong applicant will have at least three years’ experience advising Oregon governments regarding policing, corrections, experience with subpoena and public records responses, and significant experience providing written constitutional, statutory or ordinance analysis and advice.  All successful applicants will demonstrate that they care deeply about public service, good governance and rigorous legal review and have worked creatively and collaboratively with public entity clients.
