Job Title: Assistant Attorney General VI Position Type: Regular Full-Time

Salary: $89,727 – $150,415. The salary range is based on a multitude of factors including applicable personnel rules, regulations, and guidelines.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.

Responsibilities

The OAG is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorney General to represent the State Highway Administration (“SHA”), a modal administration of the Maryland Department of Transportation. Responsibilities involve a wide range of transactional activities, including: preparing instruments relating to the acquisition, conveyance, and management of real property; preparing Complaints for Condemnation, Inquisitions, and other documents relating to the condemnation of real property; and drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements with governmental agencies, utilities, railroads, and private business entities. The position: reviews and researches records (including title reports, deeds, deeds of trust, plats, land records, leases, contracts, SDAT records, and other public records) to determine ownership, liens, and other interests in real property; reads and understands right of way plats; and prepares a wide range of real estate instruments, including deeds, releases, easements, environmental mitigation covenants and restrictions, option contracts, leases, rights of entry, and license agreements. The position also provides legal advice and support to SHA on a wide variety of subjects, including the Maryland Public Information Act, environmental law, and State and federal laws relating to highways and transportation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of transactional experience, with excellent writing and communication skills. Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: real estate, title, agreements involving governmental agencies, business and business transactions, eminent domain, zoning and land use and development, environmental law, Maryland Public Information Act, highways and transportation law, utility law, and railroad law. Maryland Bar required.
