NOTICE OF JOB VACANCY #24-133

Opportunities currently exist in the unclassified service with the Department of Law & Public Safety, Division of Law, for applicants who meet the requirements specified below:

TITLE: Deputy Attorney General 4 OR Deputy Attorney General 3

SALARY:

  • DAG 4 – $87,578.62 to $124,980.46
  • DAG 3 – $100,682.82 to $143,971.92

LOCATION: Division of Law Affirmative Civil Enforcement Practice Group Civil Rights Section 124 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ 07102

NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: Three (3)

The Civil Rights Section based in Newark spearheads litigation enforcing anti-discrimination laws on behalf of the Division on Civil Rights and the Attorney General. The Section’s work includes providing legal counsel to the Division on Civil Rights, assisting with strategic investigations and bringing administrative and trial court enforcement actions to combat unlawful discrimination such as redlining, housing discrimination, religious discrimination, and gender discrimination, among others.

Responsibilities

DUTIES: Under the direction of the Section Chief and Assistant Section Chief of the Civil Rights Section, and other supervisory officials in Department of Law and Public Safety, Deputy Attorneys General will provide counsel to and represent the Division on Civil Rights; assist with strategic investigations; represents the Division on Civil Rights and the Attorney General in litigation enforcing antidiscrimination and civil rights laws; monitor judicial and legislative developments in civil rights law; participate in multistate investigations and litigation; and perform other related work as required.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor. Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

  • DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL 4: Two (2) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL 3: Three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.

LICENSE: Appointee will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

*SALARY NOTE: For newly hired individuals, the starting salary and title will be determined by the Department commensurate with experience. Salary offers and titles are non-negotiable and will fall within the range posted.

PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience with the Law Against Discrimination or the New Jersey Civil Rights Act and/or experience handling complex civil affirmative investigations and enforcement actions.
