Delaware’s Attorney General, the State’s chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, fight fraud, and protect consumers in the First State. In meeting this mission, Attorney General Kathy Jennings is supported by teams of talented lawyers and staff in the Criminal, Civil, Family, Fraud and Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights and Public Trust Divisions. Each of the more than 500 staff who work in the Office of the Attorney General are dedicated to serving all Delawareans with integrity and passion. Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public’s access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.

The Delaware Department of Justice, Family Division, Juvenile Delinquency and Truancy Unit, in New Castle County, seeks a Deputy Attorney General.  The Deputy Attorneys General in this Unit are responsible for compiling and producing discovery, drafting motions and briefs, performing research, extending and negotiating plea agreements, and taking matters to trial.  This is a Unit with a high volume of cases and several court calendars scheduled per week.  Deputy Attorneys General in this Unit are responsible for prosecuting both juvenile delinquency and truancy cases.

***This is a Casual/Seasonal position, currently approved to work up to 37.5 hours a week, non-pension eligible without healthcare and/or other benefits.

Responsibilities

A qualified candidate’s strengths will include knowledge of criminal law and procedure, the ability to evaluate criminal cases, determine resolutions, and anticipate legal issues with the ability to research accurately and effectively.  Candidates must have the ability to learn and apply the relevant laws and court rules.   Candidates must also have or be able to develop a good working relationship with other Deputy Attorneys General, support staff and Court personnel.

Qualifications

Membership in Delaware Bar is not required; however, membership or current Rule 55 admission is preferred.  Candidates who are not currently admitted to practice, in any fashion, must have either passed the February 2024 Delaware bar exam, or be registered to take the next available exam (July, 2024).
