Delaware’s Attorney General, the State’s chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, fight fraud, and protect consumers in the First State. Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public’s access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
The Department of Justice (“DOJ”), Civil Division, Public Safety Unit, seeks a Deputy Attorney General (“DAG”) to serve as general legal counsel to the Department of Correction (“DOC”), which includes its Commissioner and four Bureaus: Prisons, Community Corrections, Healthcare, and Administrative Services. This position will primarily advise the Bureaus of Community Corrections, Healthcare, and Administrative Services.
The DOC provides an office for this DAG in its administration building in Dover, Delaware. The successful candidate may also maintain an office at the Department of Justice in in the Wilmington or Dover, Delaware.
Responsibilities
This DAG will work collaboratively with a second DOC DAG to advise DOC on correctional legal issues, including compliance with constitutional, statutory, and regulatory obligations, and professional guidelines and standards, to draft correspondence and pleadings related to sentence modification, medical care, programming, and good time calculations, to draft, review, and negotiate contracts, policies, and legislation, to offer agency training on emerging legal issues, to respond to subpoenas and FOIA requests, to advise on labor and human relations issues, to litigate significant civil and criminal matters, and to serve as a liaison to outside counsel.
