The Special Litigation Section represents the State, its agencies, officers and employees in complex, novel, controversial or high-profile litigation. The Special Deputy Attorney General position enhances the Attorney General’s Office’s ability to represent the State’s interests.

This position will perform advanced professional legal work and handle lawsuits at all levels in all courts of the State and the United States. These suits can involve constitutional issues, public policy concerns or issues that have extreme impact on economic conditions, natural resources or a broad segment of the general public.  

This attorney will be responsible for consulting and working with clients in other agencies and for keeping those clients appropriately informed about the status of suits involving them.

This position will have direct and independent responsibility for devising and implementing strategies and tactics for resolving suits in a manner consistent with the state’s policies and the interests of citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to conduct complex civil or criminal litigation in trial and appellate courts and
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and court decisions.
  • Knowledge of case, statutory, regulatory, common law, judicial and quasi-judicial procedures.
  • Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments and express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically in oral and written form.
  • Ability to determine issues in various cases, analyze complex legal problems, and render formal opinions.

Qualifications

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and five years of progressively responsible professional legal experience.
