Case Description

. In December, 1991, Loewen acquired seven Doane Beale & Ames funeral homes in Barnstable County and one funeral home in Harwich. According to the complaint filed by the Attorney General’s office, the purpose and effect of this acquisition was to lessen competition for funeral home services in the Cape Cod area. The consent decree was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and was approved and entered on February 15, 1994. Pursuant to the agreement, Loewen is required to divest the assets of the F.A. Eaton home, located in Harwich, and two Doane Beale & Ames homes, located in South Yarmouth and Wellfleet. Loewen has also agreed to contribute $15,000 over the next two years to charitable organizations that serve the elderly and low-income residents of Barnstable County. Additionally, Loewen has agreed to contribute $20,000 towards the Attorney General’s costs in this matter.
