Russell Suzuki was appointed a deputy attorney general in 1981, after four years of private practice in the pineapple plantation town of Wahiawa, Hawai‘i, where he grew up along with his two brothers and two sisters. A proud student of our public school system, Russell graduated from Leilehua High School, the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and The Ohio State University College of Law.

Russell has been with the Hawai‘i Department of Attorney General for 36 years and has served under the administrations of five governors and nine attorneys general. He has served as First Deputy to three Attorneys General and, on occasion, served as Acting Attorney General during periods of vacancies and transition. Prior to his appointment as First Deputy, Russell was the supervisor of the Administration Division, which advises a variety of state agencies, boards and commissions of the executive and judicial branches of government and previous to that supervised the Department's Education Division where he advised both the Hawai‘i Department of Education and the University of Hawai‘i. He litigated civil rights cases and cases involving the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Hawaii's Attorney General is both the top legal and law enforcement officer for the State, with responsibilities to advise all three branches of government. His vision for the office is to make sure that the advice given to any public officer is clear and consistent, regardless of who the requestor is.
