Since NAAG's founding in 1907, the state attorneys general have partnered with the U.S. Attorney General on initiatives with shared interests. As part of that relationship, NAAG annually invites the U.S. Attorney General to speak with NAAG members. Throughout the year, NAAG engages with the U.S. Attorney General through the Executive Working Group on Prosecutorial Relations and other joint efforts.

Several former state attorneys general have later served as the U.S. Attorney General including former Ohio Attorney General William Saxbe, former Massachusetts Attorney General Elliot Richardson, former Missouri Attorney General John Ashcroft, and former Alabama Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
